When we first designed the Marijuana game, we committed to developing an accurate and contextual piece that provided informative and educational information. Players can decide for themselves if the laws that Officer Craig has held them accountable to our too restrictive, not restrictive enough or somewhere in between for marijuana entrepreneurs. By humanizing those in the industry and showing the extent and consequences of the laws regulating marijuana, we hope to have given players accurate tools to judge the state of legal marijuana. We also hope to give our audience a deeper understanding of the complexity of recreational marijuana legalization. With the progression of these laws, we wanted to give players an opportunity to understand them first-hand. Through both the initial addition of marijuana legalization to the state’s constitution and later legislative choices, Colorado has developed a thorough set of laws that dictate the actions of retail marijuana stores. Sensible News states in History of Colorado’s Marijuana Laws- Sensible Colorado that Colorado has “more licensed medical marijuana businesses than any state in the country,” and the state’s impact as a trailblazer in both medical and recreational legalization has spread nationwide. While reading dialog and context about his/her position, the player must evaluate legal, business and moral dilemmas when deciding what choice they should make as a business owner.Ĭolorado has notably created a large dialog surrounding medical and recreational Marijuana, a dialog that we hope to add to with this game. Mechanically, the game is built around clicking and choosing a choice based on the set-up of the question or initial statement. They could also swap out images.The mission of Green Rush is to place users in an immersive gameplay experience where they explore the business mechanics, relevant laws and potential problems in opening up a recreational marijuana shop in Denver. As an extension activity, have students copy the headlines out of a newspaper or political magazine and then rewrite them to reframe their points of view. Get students to consider whether gossip and sports - like they do in the game - distract us from more important current events. Get them to identify media they believe is biased and to explain how they can tell. After students play the game, encourage them to draw connections to the world around them.
For less focused students, give a brief introduction to get them thinking about bias before jumping in. Let your students dive in and play without any instruction, so they can discover the game’s point on their own and get excited for discussion. Since it only takes 10-15 minutes to play, it serves as a great discussion starter and introduction to a lesson or unit on media messages, or even persuasive writing. This is a game that’s best played solo or in pairs, because students will need to focus and do some reading. Earn a badge of recognition for teaching digital citizenship.
